Exhibitions & Milestones

This is the story of The Evzones Collection, in order, with the dates and venues and a link to the press coverage of each milestone where there is one. It begins with a Presidential Guard visit to Sydney in 2016 and, so far, ends at the Gold Coast in 2026.

At a glance: more than 7,000 people have seen the exhibition across Australia, and since the Canberra launch in 2021 my team and I have raised and donated over AU$97,780 to Greek charities, organisations, institutions and agencies in Australia and Greece (News; Australia).

2016–2020: Meeting the Evzones

April 2016 – Sydney: where it began

I first met the Evzones in April 2016, when a detachment of the Presidential Guard came to Sydney for the Anzac commemorations and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, at the invitation of the Hellenic Club Sydney. With special permission from the RSL, they mounted a guard at the Martin Place Cenotaph from 20 to 22 April. The Hellenic Club Sydney asked me to photograph the rest of that tour, and later that year I travelled to Greece and started photographing the Guard there.

2016–2023 – Seven years behind the scenes

Over the next seven years I was granted rare, behind-the-scenes access to all areas of the Garrison in Athens and to the ceremonial duties the Evzones carry out every day. I followed them again in Australia when members of the Guard returned to Melbourne and Adelaide. I tried to capture photos that are not common, in places where very few are privileged even to get a glimpse of the Evzones.

2017 – Sunrise on the Acropolis

In 2017 I shot the first season of the TV travel series My Greek Odyssey. Five hours after I arrived in Greece, I was climbing the Acropolis with the Evzones to photograph the sunrise.

19–21 February 2021 – Canberra: national launch and the 1821–2021 Bicentennial program

The official launch of the national exhibition took place at the Hellenic Club of Canberra. It was the first event on the calendar of the National Committee for the 200 Years of Greek Independence 1821–2021, coordinated through the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, and the exhibition was part of the official national program for the Bicentennial. I donated three exhibition prints for auction, which raised over $15,000 for the local Greek School.

19 December 2023 – Donation to the President of the Hellenic Republic

At an intimate viewing at the Greek Presidential Guard Headquarters (Garrison) in Athens, I donated the entire Athens exhibition, 27 photographs on hand-woven metallic canvas, to the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic, and gave President Katerina Sakellaropoulou a guided tour. The Presidency had asked for the collection to be permanently displayed at the Presidential Palace and at the headquarters of the Presidential Guard.
